Inverse acoustic scattering by small-obstacle expansion of misfit function

چکیده
This article concerns an extension of the topological derivative concept for 3D inverse acoustic scattering problems, whereby the featured cost function J is expanded in powers of the characteristic size ε of a sound-hard scatterer about ε = 0. The O(ε) approximation of J is established for a small scatterer of arbitrary shape of given location embedded in an arbitrary acoustic domain, and generalized to several such scatterers. Simpler and more explicit versions of this result are obtained for a centrally-symmetric scatterer and a spherical scatterer. An approximate and computationally fast global search procedure is proposed, where the location and size of the unknown scatterer is estimated by minimizing the O(ε) approximation of J over a search grid. Its usefulness is demonstrated on numerical experiments, where the identification of a spherical, ellipsoidal or banana-shaped scatterer embedded in a acoustic half-space from known acoustic pressure on the surface is considered.

Small-inclusion asymptotic of misfit functionals for inverse problems in acoustics
Abstract The aim of this study is an extension and employment of the concept of topological derivative as it pertains to the nucleation of infinitesimal inclusions in a reference (i.e. background) acoustic medium. The developments are motivated by the need to develop a preliminary indicator functional that would aid the solution of inverse scattering problems in terms of a rational initial ‘gue...
متن کاملA Point-source Method for Inverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Obstacle Scattering Problems
We present the mathematical foundation for a point-source method to solve some inverse acoustic and electromagnetic obstacle scattering problems in three dimensions. We investigate the inverse acoustic scattering problem by a sound-soft and a sound-hard scatterer and the inverse electromagnetic scattering problem by a perfect conductor. Two independent approaches to the method are presented whi...
متن کاملInverse Acoustic and Electromagnetic Scattering Theory
This paper is a survey of the inverse scattering problem for time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic waves at fixed frequency. We begin by a discussion of “weak scattering” and Newton-type methods for solving the inverse scattering problem for acoustic waves, including a brief discussion of Tikhonov’s method for the numerical solution of ill-posed problems. We then proceed to prove a uniquen...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Hessian for inverse scattering problems: I. Inverse shape scattering of acoustic waves
We derive expressions for the shape Hessian operator of the data misfit functional corresponding to the inverse problem of inferring the shape of a scatterer from reflected acoustic waves, using a Banach space setting and the Lagrangian approach. The shape Hessian is then analyzed in both Hölder and Sobolev spaces. Using an integral equation approach and compact embeddings in Hölder and Sobolev...
